Six checks you can do in two minutes

Six checks you can do in two minutes

Most gadget complaints we hear start the same way: the box looked fine, the price was good, and then something felt off after a week. You do not need a lab to catch that. You need two minutes and a habit of checking six things before you hand over cash.

1. Warranty card and serial number

Look for a printed warranty card with a serial number that matches the one on the box and, where possible, on the device itself. On earbuds the serial is usually inside the charging case lid or under the ear tip area. On watches it is on the back of the case. If the card is blank, handwritten, or the numbers do not match, treat it as a warning sign. A genuine unit has one consistent number across all three places.

2. Packaging print quality

Original packaging has sharp text, even colour, and no spelling mistakes. Fakes usually show blurry logos, slightly wrong shades, and thin cardboard that dents when you press it. Check the inner tray too. Genuine trays hold the product snugly; copies often rattle.

3. The model number in the Bluetooth list

Pair the device before paying if the seller allows it. Open Bluetooth settings and read the name that appears. A real unit shows its proper model name, not "Bluetooth Device" or a random string of letters. This one check catches a lot of copies, because cloning the firmware name is harder than copying the shell.

4. Weight and finish against official pictures

Hold it next to the official product photos on your phone. Check the weight in your hand, the seam lines, the button feel, and the finish of the ports. Copies are usually lighter and the plastic has a cheaper shine. On over-ear headphones, the hinge is the giveaway. On watches, it is the screen bezel and the strap clasp.

5. Seller history

Check how long the seller has been active, whether they show real photos of the actual unit, and how they respond to questions. A seller who answers clearly about warranty and returns is worth more than one who only posts a low price. With Cash on Delivery you can inspect the parcel before paying, so use that right.

6. Price against everyone else

If one seller is far below the market rate, ask why. Sometimes it is a genuine clearance. Often it is not. Compare a few listings before you decide. For reference, our own A9 Pro ANC Earbuds White are Rs 2,399, down from Rs 3,300, and the LT-11 GT 3 Smart Watch is Rs 3,399, down from Rs 4,400. Those are discounted but not unrealistically cheap.

Run all six checks and you will know within two minutes whether the deal is real. Cash on Delivery is available nationwide, with delivery in 2-4 working days in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan, and 3-5 days elsewhere. Inspect first, then pay.

What each check catches, and what it misses

What each check catches, and what it misses

In the first part we listed six checks: packaging and seals, serial number, build and finish, software and settings, battery behaviour, and the seller's return policy. Each one is useful. None of them is perfect. Here is an honest look at what each check actually catches, and where a clever fake slips through.

1. Packaging and seals

Catches: Refurbished units sold as new, opened boxes, missing accessories, and lazy local copies with spelling mistakes on the box.

Misses: A good counterfeit box is often better printed than the real one. Seals can be re-applied. If the box is perfect but the price is half of market rate, the box is not proof of anything.

2. Serial number

Catches: Units with no serial at all, or the same serial printed on two different boxes.

Misses: Cloned serials. A fake seller copies one genuine serial across a whole batch. It will check out online the first time you look it up.

3. Build and finish

Catches: Loose hinges, uneven gaps, cheap plastic, buttons that rattle, weight that feels wrong in the hand.

Misses: High-grade clones. Some fakes use the same shell moulds. If you have never held the original, your hand cannot tell you much.

4. Software and settings

Catches: The most common fakes. If the companion app does not recognise the device, or the firmware page is blank, that is a strong signal.

Misses: Clones that copy the pairing name and basic menu. They connect, they show a battery icon, and then the noise cancellation does nothing.

5. Battery behaviour

Catches: Old cells, used units, and cheap batteries that drop from 100% to 60% in twenty minutes.

Misses: Nothing much, but it takes a few days to judge. You cannot test this at the courier's counter.

6. Return policy

Catches: Sellers who know their stock is questionable. A clear return window is the only check that protects you after the other five fail.

Misses: Nothing, if it is written and honoured. It fails only when it is verbal.

Why price alone proves nothing

A low price is not evidence of a fake. Genuine stock gets discounted for real reasons: end of line, bulk buying, a new model replacing it. A shop selling the LT-11 GT 3 Smart Watch at Rs 3,399 instead of Rs 4,400 is not automatically cheating you.

But a very cheap price plus one other problem is enough. Cheap plus no serial. Cheap plus an app that will not connect. Cheap plus a seller who avoids written returns. One warning sign is a discount. Two warning signs is a pattern. Walk away.

For reference, here is what honest local pricing looks like on similar gadgets:

If a listing sits far below these numbers and fails even one check above, do not send money. With Cash on Delivery you can inspect the box before paying, which is the single biggest advantage you have. Use it. Delivery is 2-4 working days in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan, and 3-5 days elsewhere.

Where to buy with confidence

Where to Buy With Confidence

You have checked the seal, the serial number, and the IMEI. Now the last question is the most practical one: who are you actually paying? In Pakistan, a large share of gadget problems do not come from the product itself. They come from the seller disappearing after the money changes hands.

Here is what any seller should give you before you pay a single rupee.

1. A real business number

Not just a WhatsApp account with a display picture. A working phone number you can call, and a business name that stays the same across Facebook, Instagram, and the website. If the page was created last month and has no address or contact details, treat that as a warning.

2. A written return policy

Ask one simple question: if the gadget arrives faulty, what happens? A serious seller will answer within minutes and in clear words — for example, "report within 24 hours and we replace it." If the answer is vague, or the seller says "no return once opened," walk away. You are not being difficult by asking. You are being normal.

3. A warranty you can actually use

Check whether the warranty is from the brand or from the shop, and how long it lasts. A shop warranty is fine as long as the shop is reachable. A brand warranty is better for anything expensive. Either way, get it in writing on the invoice, not just in a chat message.

4. Cash on Delivery

This is the single biggest protection you have. With COD, you pay the courier when the parcel reaches you, not before. That means you can open the box, hold the product, and check it before handing over cash. Nationwide COD is available, with delivery in 2-4 working days in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Multan, and 3-5 days elsewhere.

If a seller insists on full advance payment for a small item, that is a choice you can make — but you are giving up your only real safety net. For a first order from any new store, COD is the sensible route.

5. A price that makes sense

Compare before you commit. A genuine product at a fair price looks like this:

The LT-11 GT 3 Smart Watch at Rs 3,399 gives you a 1.3" touchscreen, heart rate monitoring, and IP67 water resistance — reasonable for the price if you want a basic daily tracker. The A9 Pro ANC Earbuds at Rs 2,399 and the Galaxy Buds Pro Style at Rs 2,999 both offer ANC and are aimed at buyers who want noise cancellation without spending a lot. The AirPods Max at Rs 3,199 is a style-focused over-ear option with ANC and spatial audio; it is not the Apple original, so buy it for what it is, not for the brand name.

6. An invoice

Ask for one. It should carry the product name, the price you paid, the date, and the seller\'s contact details. Without it, a warranty claim becomes a argument you cannot win.

If something arrives wrong

Do not use the product. Take clear photos and a short video of the parcel and the fault, note the courier\'s receipt, and contact the seller the same day. A good seller will arrange a replacement or refund. If the seller goes silent, report the matter to the courier and to the platform you found them on. And next time, pay cash on delivery.

FAQ

Aksar poochay jane wale sawalaat

How do I check if earbuds are original?

Check the warranty card for a serial number, compare the packaging print and weight against the brand official pictures, and look for the model number in your phone’s Bluetooth list. Copies usually get two of those three wrong.

Is a cheap price proof of a fake?

Not on its own. Some genuine products are discounted heavily, especially older models. It is a warning sign worth checking, not a verdict.

What should the warranty card have on it?

The brand name, the model number, a serial number, and the importer or retailer name with a contact. A card with only a sticker and no serial is not worth much when something breaks.
